I have been learning to play golf for about 6 months now. I am still not sure how far to stand from the ball when I address it. Can anyone give me some advice? Howie L.

Well Howie I have only been playing for almost a year and have been given a number of suggestions. But this is what works for me. I first seat the club square with the ball on the ground and locate the grip against my inner thigh of my leg closest to the target prior to gripping it. I place the grip in the same place every time. I do this as a distance place holder and adjust from there with my setup, etc. Since each club varies in length my distance from the ball will also vary and in my case I have a very upright posture. I choke up or down on the shaft depending on the lay of the land. I even use a similar distance place holder with my driver. This may not be the conventional way but it works for me and gives me some consistency. Golf Addict Ritual A15

Howie, I have been playing golf for 10 years and I will have to say that everyone does not have the same stance and therefore there is not a specific distance that one must stand away from the ball. The biggest thing is to make sure that you do not feel like you are reaching for the ball or like you are crowding yourself. Since you have only been playing for a short time I would also recommend that you grip each club as the same place for each shot, like myself on all full shots I have my top hand at the very top of the grip so that the part of my hand closet to my body is on the edge of the grip, this makes me stand the same distance from the ball with each club every time I hit that specific club. So with my driver I always stand the same distance from the ball, and with my 9 iron I stand closer to the ball but each time I hit my 9 iron I stand the same distance from the ball. To help you find this distance I would first without a club take your stance and let your arms hang down naturally and come together, this is where your hands should be before you swing the club. Next grip a club as if you were going to hit a full shot and get your hand in that same natural position they were in without the club, then with the club on the ground this will be close the distance you need to stand from the ball.
