Maurice Allen is a 28 year old native of Orlando, Florida. A graduate of Florida A&M University with a BS in Biology and is currently enrolled at Life University in Marietta, GA.
While he wasn't unfamiliar with golf he had never competed and had not picked up a club for almost a year when he started this endeavor in May 2010. This was after a friend convinced Maurice to go and play in a tournament with him. After actively pursuing the RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship for a few months he has proven himself to be a worthy competitor. Maurice has already participated in several long drive qualifiers in Sarasota, Florida; Augusta, Georgia; Billings, Montana; and Denver, Colorado. While at Billings,Maurice swept the super qualifier in the open divisions with powering drives of 360 and 362 yards. This qualified him for the long drive regional competition in Colorado.
Not a stranger to setbacks, he will not let anything deter him from his goal of winning the long drive competition in Mesquite, Nevada, October 30-31, 2010. To do so he had to place well in at least two regional tournaments. He has now recuperated from his injury and is back in the swing of things eagerly looking forward to the upcoming tournament in Nevada.
Maurice's early success at these qualifiers has landed him a few sponsorships, one of which is with Bang Golf. He has also been featured in several newspaper articles. But Maurice is competitive and doesn't like to lose so he is always striving for perfection. He is also keenly aware that he has others helping him and feels the pressure to perform. He does so and leaves it all on the table when he is competing in a tournament.
Determined to win Maurice is not letting his new found fame get the best of him even though it takes a lot of time and effort to learn the sport. A very humble and dedicated young man he is constantly practicing to become more consistent and increase the length of his drive. But he was able to enjoy a break and visit Barbados for the first time, where his mother's family is from, with his brother earlier this year. This was just before he went to the tournament that started his latest pursuit. With all that Maurice has going on it's a wonder how he keeps everything together and stays focused. Balancing his education, work, and sporting aspirations is not an easy task. In an interview with the Marietta Daily Journal, Maurice said "I've read somewhere that obsession is the key to greatness and I am becoming obsessed with long drive. When you are obsessed with something, you either become extremely great or extremely frustrated. I've experienced some frustration, but if I persevere and work hard to get better, hopefully I will experience greatness." Because of the expenses incurred in pursuiting this dream Maurice is always interested in, and appreciative of, sponsorship opportunities. Studying to become a chiropractor he is currently taking 21 credit hours, helping the rugby team with speed work, and is usually training 15 hours each week to perfect the art of long driving. Quite the stellar athlete, he has played volleyball, baseball, football, won national track championships, and is also a certified personal trainer. He is now hoping to add golf as another notch on his belt of sporting accomplishments.
